Our Austere and Emergency Medicine programs are ideal medical training for leaders in remote areas including outdoor educators, guides, military, professional search and rescue teams, researchers, disaster relief personal, pilots/flight crews. The curriculum is comprehensive and practical. It includes the essential principles and skills required to assess and manage medical problems in isolated and extreme environments for days and weeks if necessary (Prolonged Field Care).
Subject Matter Experts experienced in the field of austere medicine are brought in to teach the didactic content of the program.
The Austere Medicine Provider program consists of a combination of lecture and hands-on instructional sessions of mock-victim scenarios. This practical foundation in wilderness/austere medicine will enhance your competency to assess patients and follow treatment guidelines for life support until further care or evacuation is available. A wide range of emergencies and conditions will be covered, such as hyper and hypothermia, high altitude related problems, moving and evacuating patients, avalanche, and infectious disease.
The following topics will be covered, but not limited to:
- General concepts of austere medicine and the Patient Assessment System.
- Prolonged Field Care definition & scope.
- How to identify, diagnose, and treat medical conditions that may occur in remote or austere environments.
- knowledge and skill set to treat the components within the MARCH Algorithm (massive hemorrhage, airway control, respiratory support, circulation, hypothermia, head injury)
- Assessment and treatment using the E-PAWS-B mnemonic (eyes, treat pain, administer antibiotics, wounds, splinting, burns)
- Understanding the protocols & application of the RAVINES mnemonic (resuscitation with fresh whole blood, reduce tourniquets as quickly as possible, airway & cric care package, ventilate or oxygenate, initiate tele-medicine and evacuation early, nursing care, environmental considerations, surgical procedures)
- Advanced Trauma Life Support Skills & Protocols.
- P.A.C.E (primary, alternative, contingency, emergency) planning and application.
- Anatomy and major problems of the respiratory, circulatory, and nervous systems.
- Musculoskeletal injury assessment and splinting.
- Neurological Emergencies (Seizures & Stroke)
- Spine injury assessment and management.
- Allergies and anaphylaxis.
- High altitude related medical emergencies.
- Wound and burn management.
- Environmental problems such as hyper and hypothermia.
- Moving and evacuating patients using litters, patient carries and improvised litters.
- Evacuations, decision making, and leadership.
- Selection of medications and equipment that might be useful and appropriate in a variety of remote and resource challenged patient care settings.
- Equipment load-out and packing.
- Helicopter patient evacuation, selecting and marking landing zone(s).
- Helicopter hoist evacuations, procedures and safety.
- Rope rescue knots, rigging and equipment.
Course Delivery: This course is delivered over (7) seven days. This program will conclude with a culmination exercise.
