Our critical skills course will introduce the student to survival and bush craft skills and training. This intensive 3 day course will give the student the skills and knowledge to survive in the wilderness and remote locations. This program is ideal for; outdoor educators, guides, military, professional search and rescue teams, researchers, disaster relief personal, pilots/flight crews or anyone interested in being prepared with advanced survival training and skills when venturing into the wilderness or remote locations. This course centers on "Modern Survival" as opposed to Primitive Survival Techniques.
Note: This is an intensive 3 day survival course, running 12-14 hours per day.
The Critical Skills Survival Course will give the student the following skills and knowledge;
- Being properly equipped in the wilderness (This includes clothing, gear, basic survival equipment, water filtration systems, first aid equipment, emergency signaling, fire starting equipment, knives/multi tools, navigation equipment.)
- Developing the "SURVIVAL MINDSET"
- Understanding the survival rule of 3's.
- 10 C's of Survival Equipment (cutting tool, combustion device, cover, container, cordage, compass, cotton bandana (shemagh), candlelight (flashlight, head lamp), canvas needle and cargo tape (duct tape)
- Understanding and evaluating risk in the wilderness/remote areas.
- Understanding priorities when encountering survival situations.
- S.L.L.S (stop, look, listen, smell)
- P.A.C.E ( Primary, Alternative, Contingency, Emergency) Planning and Application
- Using electronic alert signalling devices and radios.
- Fire making under extreme conditions/stressors/enviroments and fires importance in survival situations (We cover different methods of making fire; ferro rod, lighter/matches, sunlight, bow drill and other types of ignition devices.)
- Basic orienteering maps , compass, GPS, and natural navigation signs.
- How to build a variety of survival shelters including choosing proper locations, using improvised materials, shelter types, knowing the 5 W's for shelter site selection (water, wood, wind, widow makers, wildlife)
- Water filtration/purification systems both commercially available and natural to your surroundings.
- Techniques for staying warm at night and protecting yourself against hypothermia.
- Introduction to basic food sources including edible and medicinal plants found in the wilderness and mountain regions (berries, shrubs, grasses, fungi, and plants with nutritional or medicinal purposes).
- Basic knife and hatchet, axe, saw selection and use.
- Making and improvising basic snares and small game traps.
- Knots for bushcraft and survival situations.
- Types of signalling devices and natural emergency signaling methods.
- Survival Kits and contents.
- Types of first-aid kits, IFAKS and what contents are required specific to wilderness and remote areas.
